The Supreme Court’s ruling on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization has already elicited outrage and some violence from the pro-abortion crowd. The anger culminated in protests across the country. But in Arizona, the sentiment erupted into a hostage situation at the state’s Senate building. After a series of firebombings against pro-life organizations, this situation has many concerned that the violence could escalate even further.
Police officers in Phoenix, Arizona, were forced to use tear gas to disperse a large group of protesters outside the Senate building after the Court’s ruling was handed down. “Protesters threatened to break the AZ Senate entryway glass,” Republican Arizona State Senator Wendy Rogers tweeted. The fracas occurred as state lawmakers were in the middle of voting on legislation.
GOP State Sen. Kelly Townsend said the situation became a “hostage” situation when lawmakers were told not to leave the building. “We are currently there being held hostage inside the Senate building due to members of the public trying to breach our security,” Townsend tweeted on Friday evening. “We smell tear gas and the children of one of the members are in the office sobbing with fear.”
She then said she expects “a J24 committee to be created immediately,” in a reference to the Democrats’ House Select Committee on the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the US Capitol building.
The senators continued conducting business after the mob was dispersed. “The series of votes include a massive expansion of the state’s private school voucher system that passed the House earlier this week,” according to Fox News.
Naturally, there were no condemnations from the left regarding the situation in Arizona. Nobody referred to it as an insurrection. In fact, they will likely pay little attention to the matter. But it is possible this incident is not the extent of the violence that will result from the court’s ruling.
Pro-abortion activists have bombed dozens of pro-life organizations in response to the Court’s ruling. Jane’s Revenge, a progressive terrorist group, has been behind many attacks. In addition, it issued a series of violent threats against pregnancy crisis centers, churches, and other groups that oppose abortion. Most recently, it had vowed to carry out a “Night of Rage” on May 30 over the repeal of Roe.
So far, none of the attacks have targeted human beings. Kyle Shideler, director and senior analyst for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism at the Center for Security Policy, told Fox News that Jane’s Revenge “relies on inciting people to vandalize and torch pro-life clinics and facilities through calls to arms on its website.”
It is not beyond the realm of possibility that a loose-knit organization like Jane’s Revenge could escalate its activities to terrorist acts against people. Last week, the Justice Department said it would investigate the firebombings after three weeks of attacks. The White House condemned these acts. But no other high-profile Democrat has spoken out against the vandalism of pro-life buildings as of this writing. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi refrained from criticizing those targeting these groups when asked about the violence. Instead, she just recited the usual mantra: “Women have a right to choose.”
The overturning of Roe has brought the abortion issue to the forefront. Some speculate it will have an impact on the upcoming congressional elections. However, if there is more pro-abortion violence, it could easily backfire on Democrats instead of Republicans. Either way, the Supreme Court’s decision on abortion will continue to have political ramifications in the future.
