A lot of folks on the left are not too happy with Texas Governor Greg Abbott at the moment. Perhaps it is because he is forcing at least one left-leaning politician to reap the consequences of the open borders policies Democrats have been championing. This is where District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser enters the scene. She is complaining about Abbott’s policy of shipping illegal immigrants to the nation’s capital instead of forcing Texans to figure out how to address the situation.
Flipping the Script on Open Borders
Abbott has been on the front lines of the battle over immigration ever since President Joe Biden exacerbated the crisis through a series of policy reversals. As the White House has been unable – or unwilling – to stem the flow of migrants to the southern border, the governor has taken matters into his own hands and then placed them into the hands of those who support the policies that motivate people to unlawfully enter the country.
Bowser has taken to the media to complain about Texas busing migrants into DC while they await the adjudication of their asylum claims. This has created a problem rarely experienced by leftist politicians. During an appearance on CBS’ Face the Nation on July 17, host Margaret Brennan brought up a report indicating that illegal immigrants being transported from Texas and Arizona are filling up homeless shelters in the DC area.
The mayor urged the Biden administration to lend a hand to deal with the influx of illegals, who she claims are being “tricked” into coming to the capital. She said:
“Well, this is a very significant issue. We have for sure called on the federal government to work across state lines to prevent people from really being tricked into getting on buses. We think they’re largely asylum seekers who are going to final destinations that are not Washington, D.C. I worked with the White House to make sure that FEMA provided a grant to a local organization that is providing services to folks. I fear that they’re being tricked into nationwide bus trips when their final destinations are places all over the United States of America.”
Abbott’s decision to bus illegals to DC came after a myriad of border towns complained that they lacked the resources necessary to care for those crossing into the state illegally.
Various nonprofits in DC have called for Bowser’s assistance in managing the flood of illegals. Madhvi Bahl from the Migrant Solidarity Mutual Aid Network asked Bowser’s office to support the organizations that do not receive federal funds. “She said her group has already spent more than $260,000 on the effort, so far, and their funds are dwindling,” according to local television station WUSA9.
“We have never received any money from the D.C. government, or any government,” Bahl added. “All our money has been grassroots raised. We got a few small grants. Ninety to ninety-five percent of our money has been from people Venmoing and Paypal,” she continued, referring to online payment services.
Members of the District’s council are seeking to give the arrivals COVID testing and access to isolation hotels and other amenities. They sent a letter to Bowser criticizing Abbott and Arizona Governor Doug Ducey, who has also sent illegals to DC.
“We condemn these actions by Governors Abbott and Ducey, who have demonstrated no regard for people who are exercising their human right to seek asylum,” the letter said. “The District, on the other hand, has a history of serving all residents who settle here, regardless of immigration status.”
Abbott has also enlisted the National Guard to transport illegals back to the border when they are apprehended by Texas authorities. He has defended his actions by pointing out that Biden has failed to stop the “invasion” of illegal immigrants through his policies.
One has to wonder why progressive politicians like Bowser would have a problem with housing illegal immigrants. Indeed, shouldn’t the far-leftists who support open borders relish the opportunity to help these folks? After all, the same progressives spent four years condemning former President Donald Trump for having the temerity to suggest that America protect her borders, did they not? But it appears these politicians are for open borders only when border states reap the consequences, a quintessential example of “Not in My Backyard” in action.
