On Thursday, June 23, 2022, the Supreme Court said the Second Amendment includes the right to carry a gun outside the home. Justice Thomas wrote the opinion for the Court. Joining the 6-3 vote in the majority with Thomas was Chief Justice Roberts, Justices Alito, Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, and Barrett. Justice Alito wrote a concurring opinion, as did Justices Kavanaugh, and Barrett. Justice Breyer wrote in dissent, joined by Justices Sotomayor and Kagan.
The Court holds that New York’s “proper-cause” requirement to obtain a concealed-carry license violates the Constitution. It prevents the law-abiding self-defense needs from exercising their Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms in public for self-defense.
