British Prime Minister Liz Truss has spoken to King Charles III and tendered her resignation as leader of the Conservative Party. Early this morning, the head of the 1922 Committee visited 10 Downing Street to inform the PM that he had received a number of letters of no confidence. This visit follows an evening in which members of Truss’ own cabinet publicly aired their views in calling for her to step down.
Truss will continue in the role as PM until a leadership election is held within the next week and a successor is chosen. She will be the shortest-serving prime minister in British history, racking up – as of today – just 44 days in office.
The Conservative Party will elect a leader from within their ranks by a series of ballots in which the lowest performing contender is removed. However, the opposition Labour Party is demanding a general election to put the vote to the British public.
